PDF reader with text to speech

Aurader can read a PDF aloud when the file contains text. A scanned page is a different job.

Short answer: a PDF reader with text to speech needs real text in the file. Aurader imports that PDF onto the Bookshelf and highlights the spoken sentence. A scan is an image. Save the scanned page as an article instead of expecting the PDF itself to speak.

Can this PDF be read aloud?

Two files can both end in .pdf and behave nothing alike. A text PDF was exported from a document. You can select a sentence. Aurader can import it and speak it. A scanned PDF is photographs of paper. Selecting does nothing, because there are no characters, only pixels. Aurader can take a scanned page into an article. That is the supported path for a scan, not a promise that every image PDF already contains words.

  1. Try to select a sentence. Selection means a text layer. No selection means a scan or an image-only export.
  2. Put text PDFs on the Bookshelf. Same place as EPUB and TXT. Listening position is saved separately from reading position.
  3. Put a scanned page in Articles. Articles also take text you paste, a webpage, a feed, or a DOC or DOCX where supported.
  4. Read a page in order. If the PDF has columns, sidebars or forms, listen to a page before you commit to the whole file. The visual order and the text order are not always the same.
  5. Prefer EPUB for a long book. If you can get an EPUB of the same title, the EPUB reader is the better listen. Use the PDF when the PDF is what you have.

What text to speech adds to the PDF

Once the PDF has text, listening matches the rest of Aurader. The spoken sentence stays highlighted. Speed and voice are adjustable. Pronunciation settings help with names. Optional background music and ambient sound sit under the voice. A sleep timer can stop playback. Themes change the reader around a fixed PDF. They do not reflow a PDF the way they reflow an EPUB.

The click-by-click iPhone path, including importing from Files, is PDF text to speech on iPhone. Voice engines, including what stays offline, are on the TTS reader page.

Do not expect every PDF to match an EPUB. Page images, heavy columns and missing text layers are properties of the file. Aurader does not invent a text layer that was never there.

Limits that still apply to PDFs

Free accounts can keep up to 10 books and 10 articles. A PDF on the Bookshelf counts as a book. Background music is 20 minutes a day on the free tier and unlimited with Premium. Premium is an in-app purchase: lifetime, or a weekly subscription. iCloud sync, audio export and certain on-device models require Premium.

Cloud voices and a TTS API send the text needed for synthesis to the provider you pick. System voices and English on-device neural voices can stay on the device. See offline text to speech before you rely on a PDF on a plane.

Questions about this guide

Can Aurader read a PDF aloud?

Yes, when the PDF contains selectable text. Import it to the Bookshelf and listen with the sentence highlighted.

What about a scanned PDF?

A scan is an image. Save the scanned page as an article. The PDF does not speak until there is text to read.

Is a PDF as good as an EPUB for listening?

For a novel, an EPUB is usually easier because it has chapters and reflowable text. Use the PDF when that is the file you have and it contains text.

Does the PDF leave my iPhone?

Import and parsing stay on the device. A cloud voice or your own TTS API sends the text required for synthesis to that provider.
