PDF text to speech on iPhone

How to take a PDF already on your iPhone and hear it in Aurader, sentence by sentence.

Aurader voice engine settings on iPhone

Short answer: on iPhone, import the PDF into Aurader, confirm it has text, choose a voice, and press listen. For why some PDFs fail, read PDF reader with text to speech first.

Use PDF text to speech on iPhone

  1. Get the PDF onto iOS. Files, AirDrop, Mail, or the share sheet. Aurader imports the file you pick. iOS 18 or later is required.
  2. Select a word inside the PDF. If selection works, import to the Bookshelf. If it does not, the file is a scan or an image. Create an article from the scanned page instead.
  3. Open the first page you care about. Do not assume page one of a packet is the page you want spoken.
  4. Choose the engine. System voice for broad language coverage on device. English on-device neural for a more natural English voice offline. Built-in cloud or your own TTS API when you accept that the synthesis text leaves the device.
  5. Listen to one page. Columns, captions and footers sometimes speak in a strange order. If that page is usable, continue. If it is chaos, the PDF’s text order is the limit, not a hidden setting.
  6. Leave the sentence highlighted. Speed and voice stay adjustable. Add background music or ambient sound only if you want them. Free accounts have 20 minutes of background music a day.

iPad uses the same import. The reading view is simply larger. CarPlay can play a book that is already in the library. It is not the place to check whether a PDF has text.

Jobs this steps page is for

A course PDF, a manual, or a contract you were sent as a file: select a sentence, import, listen to one page, then decide if the reading order is tolerable. A novel you also own as EPUB should not stay a PDF out of habit. A stack of photographed handouts should become articles from the scans, then be listened to as articles, including bilingual text if you are studying them.

Repeat the one-page test whenever a new PDF arrives from a different tool. Two exports of the “same” document can disagree about order. Aurader speaks the text layer it is given.

After the PDF is in the library

Listening position and reading position are stored apart, so you can skim a later page and come back to the sentence that was speaking. Notes, lookup, translation and the wordbook work on the text you can select. A sentence can become a card. Study use of those tools is text to speech for study.

If this PDF is really a book you also own as EPUB, switch. Chapter navigation and reflow are described on the EPUB reader page, and the import taps are on read an EPUB aloud.

A short troubleshooting list

  • No sound offline. Cloud and custom API voices need a network. Switch to a system voice or English neural voice. More on offline text to speech.
  • It reads the header on every page. That text is in the PDF. Aurader is speaking the file’s text layer.
  • Nothing selects. Treat it as a scan and make an article from the scanned page.
  • You hit the free library cap. Free accounts keep up to 10 books and 10 articles. Premium raises that.
